A Recipe for Kitchen Lighting
Lighting requirements in a kitchen will depend on the size and complexity of the kitchen
space.
Although a kitchen is primarily a work area, it may also be used for
dining, or as a gathering place for family and friends.
Small kitchens may
only need one central ceiling fixture, combined with perhaps task lighting tucked underneath a
cabinet.
A much larger kitchen will demand a blend of general, task and
accent lighting.
Centre Lighting
When choosing any light fitting for your kitchen always check that the
fitting is suitable for kitchens because of the moisture created in the
room.
A large, surface fluorescent provides the most light for the least cost,
but does not look particularly attractive, however, this type of fixture will supply plenty of well-diffused general lighting.
Another alternative is a centre bank of spotlights. The advantage is that
the spotlights can be moved to illuminate the key work areas of the
kitchen without making the room over-bright.
Lighting Over a Kitchen Table
If you have a kitchen/diner, it is worth considering installing some
specific lighting for the table area. A decorative pendant, operated with a dimmer control,
will provide sufficient task lighting and will allow you to lower the light
for dining or entertaining.
Under Cabinet Lighting
Available in slim, energy-efficient fluorescents, miniature track lights
or low-voltage linear systems, under cabinet lighting quickly and easily
lights up counter tops.
