Nice
has two important historic centres: the Cimiez hill, where the vestiges of
Roman occupation can still be seen and the old Nice that is almost
completely pedestrian.
The rest of the town consists mostly of beautiful old bourgeois
buildings of the last century. Very few recent constructions can be seen
except at Cimiez and the Lanterne quarter that is know as the "
Beverly Hills " of Nice.
Nice's
activities are mainly orientated towards tourism.
After
Brest, Toulon is the second military port of France and is organised
around its naval base and officers.
Its religious heritage is also well represented by the 17th century
Gothic cathedral and you can also see an amazing birds-eye view of the
town and it harbour by climbing the Mount Faron.
Still
and always the main destination for the jet-set. The town is better
appreciated in winter, with less traffic jams, people and ridiculously
expensive things.
The cultural and historical heritage of Saint Tropez is vast. The
fishing port has remained lively, the 16th century citadel has been well
preserved and three remarkable towers are scattered around Saint Tropez.
Cannes
has come a long way from little fishing village to Cannes the town of
famous festivals and congresses! Cannes is a town totally dedicated to
tourism with its numerous five star luxury hotels and its bay, that is the
preferred place of celebrities and luxury passenger liners. Today Cannes
conserves its distinctive character between modern city and sea resort.
