This region of France has some of the most varied and magnificent scenery in France and was the inspiration for famous artists including Cézanne and Van Gogh. Vineyards, olive groves and lavender fields all contribute to making the region as magnificent as any in Europe.
The capital of the region is Marseille, a popular destination for cruise ships where its port can accommodate even the largest cruise ship.
The region has a fantastic number of attractions and is steeped in history. By no means the least spectacular is Mont Ventoux, which has one of the world's largest springs.
If you are interested in history and architecture, then Provence has much to offer. In Arles you will see the splendid arenas, which date back some 2,000 years, Orange features a triumphant arch raised to the victories of Julius Caesar and Avignon, which is surrounded by 14th Century ramparts.
The cuisine of Provence is world-renowned and is the birthplace of the Salad Nicoise. The region offers a down-to-earth cuisine making the best use of locally grown produce and herbs. In addition the area produces a good selection of full-bodied wines.
For entertainment, the region offers a wide range of internationally acclaimed festivals including music, opera and jazz, many of which are held during the summer months both in the cities and even the small villages across the region.
